Somerset County in north central New Jersey is a population-dense area with a new asset for its rapid responders: Smart911. Those who download the free Smart911 app make it easier for rescue personnel to locate them in an emergency. As reported by InsiderNJ.com, the majority of calls that come into the Somerset County Communications 911 system are mobile calls that will identify the nearest cell tower. The Smart911 app will pinpoint the caller’s actual location.
The free app also encourages users to visit the smart911.com website and create a Safety Profile. “In a crisis, it can be difficult to think clearly and calmly while adrenalin is running through your system and the health and safety of your loved ones is at risk,” said Brian G. Gallagher, a County Freeholder. “The Smart911 system lets residents put vital information about their family members, homes, possible medical issues, and even how friendly your pets are before an emergency happens, so first responders know the situation before they even arrive.”
Information logged in a person’s Safety Profile can contain sensitive information, and the Smart911 app includes features to protect the release of this information. The information provided is kept secret and only opens up when a 911 call is initiated from the registered phone. Once the emergency response has been completed, the account is re-secured. The only time anyone, including law enforcement, can see the Safety Profile is during an active 911 call.
Safety profiles can be as brief or as detailed as the subscriber wishes. Information provided should include anything that will increase safety for all involved including things like:
- Where you live, with a brief description of the type of building, exterior color, and number of floors and bedrooms in the dwelling.
- Names, ages, contact information and photos of residents.
- Medical conditions of residents including current medications, allergies, mobility issues, the presence of an oxygen tank and anything else that could be relevant.
- Household pets and service animals with names and photos.
- Emergency Contacts.
- Household vehicle, including make, model, license plate numbers.
The Smart911 mobile app can be downloaded for free at the App Store or Google Play. Once enrolled, participants can create their Safety Profile online at: www.smart911.com.
