Sony and Mitsui Partner to Operate DSA in 5G Environment

Sony Group Corporation and Mitsui & Co., Ltd. say they achieved the world’s first successful operation of Sony’s Dynamic Spectrum Access (DSA) in a standalone 5G environment. The companies signed a partnership agreement to study the commercial potential for this technology and determine ways to support effective use of spectrum resources.

DSA technology is expected to help optimize RF resources since spectrum is limited while data usage increases. According to a release, DSA provides centralized radio frequencies management via a real-time resource management database, replacing the need to manage each frequency band separately. This allows underused spectrum to be allocated for use by new operators and mitigates current networks and their users from interference, according to the company.

The technology is already being used in specific locations across Europe and the United States. Spectrum assignment is for 4G/5G, and infrastructure development is underway.

Sony and Mitsui are working to position the companies for a broader rollout.

Mitsui is working on many business functions related to telecommunications, including building social infrastructure that uses information and communications technology to drive smart transformation of cities and building sustainable infrastructure to improve quality of life. A Mitsui subsidiary company is driving the use of “Local 5G,” an advanced scheme for implementing local 5G networks in Japan.

Sony has been involved in the research and development of DSA technology since an early stage. The FCC has approved the company for commercial operation to provide spectrum management services in the 3.5 GHz band; it has been designated a Citizens Broadband Radio Service Spectrum Access System administrator to operate in the United States.

Sony and Mitsui aim to build on these strengths to implement an effective spectrum utilization model and establish cutting-edge business and technology platforms. The companies plan to launch in Japan, the United States, Europe, and parts of Asia.
