Support Grows For Taller Cell Tower in Avon

UPDATE If final approval is received, the cell tower behind Huckleberry Hill in Avon, CT will soon grow from a height of 100 feet to 146 feet. The existing tower pre-dates the Buckingham Park housing development that has sprung up around it, and some residents have argued that a new tower would have an unwelcome visual impact. However, as the Hartford Courant reports, the Avon town council has weighed in in favor of the improved reception that the additional 46 feet will bring.

“This decision was always about ensuring public safety for the Avon community,” noted council member, Heather Maguire, in a written statement. “While I recognize the concerns of the neighborhood, this was a critical need of our first responders — the police and fire departments — in order to effectively protect our community.”

Council Chairman, Dan Polhamus, added, “We really vetted all the ideas. The town presented photo simulations — that was the idea of the RF engineer the neighbors hired. We think it will be visible but not very noticeable to the majority of people there.”

The tower construction project, under the direction of SBA Communications, must next gain an approval from Avon’s planning and zoning commission. Once that hurdle is cleared, the vote goes to the Connecticut Siting Council.
