In line with the Paris Agreement, which wants to limit global warming to about 35.7 degrees Fahrenheit by 2050, more than 50 mobile operators have agreed to disclose climate impacts as part of a new GSMA-led initiative. Per a statement from GSMA, more than two-thirds of mobile connectors globally are now disclosing their climate impacts, including energy and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission via the CDP global disclosure system.
The announcement, “marks the start of a collaborative action by the mobile industry to tackle the climate emergency, demonstrating how the private sector can show leadership and responsibility in addressing one of the gravest challenges facing our planet,” said GSMA Director General Mats Granryd.
“The mobile industry will form the backbone of the future economy and therefore has a unique opportunity to drive change across multiple sectors and in collaboration with our suppliers, investors, and customers.”
The disclosures make up the first phase of a climate action roadmap. By 2020, the second phase will be in place, which is the development of a decarbonization pathway. Phase two will include the development of an industry-wide plan to achieve net-zero GHG emissions by 2050 in line with the Paris Agreement, per the release.
