‘Tis The Silly Season In CarrierLand

Boys will be boys and sometimes even CEOs will be boys. And so far, they are not being very naughty and even somewhat nice! Take Sprint’s Marcelo Claure. TMONews.com, T-Mobile’s “unofficial” Blog, reported that on Monday, the CEO sent out gift baskets to T-Mobile stores around the country. Filled with cookies, candies and other sweet nibbles, the gifts also came with a card that read: “Our companies compete to take business from each other throughout the year but this is the season of giving. So enjoy these treats from Sprint. Happy Holidays, Marcelo”.

Flipping the card over reveals another message aimed at converting T-Mobile employees to the Sprint camp. It reads “Let’s Move Forward. Together.” It includes the URL for the Sales page of the Sprint Careers website. On Monday, Inside Towers reported how T-Mobile released a two-minute, 11-seconds long holiday video on YouTube featuring a T-Mobile chorus led by CEO John Legere singing a parody “Jingle Bells” that includes “Spring[t or g?] Like Hell, Sprint Like Hell, They Copy All the Way. Their Rates Could Not Get Low Enough for Anyone To Stay – HEY!” See it here.

Any T-Mobile staffer considering making a jump to Sprint might what to check his or her Christmas list twice before making a leap. The Kansas City Star reported on December 4 “The layoffs at Sprint have begun” and that in his weekly newsletter to employees, Claure wrote that “job reductions” had begun. While the Kansas City-based Sprint has been careful about releasing and exact number of cuts that are coming, Sprint’s chairman Masayoshi Son put the job displacements “in the thousands” when he made statements about Sprint in November while back home in Japan.
