Last Wednesday, the Tallmadge, OH Board of Education unanimously approved a resolution allowing TowerCo to construct a 175-foot tower. The Akron Beacon Journal reported that the school plans to lease a 40-by-70 foot area near its football stadium and would receive a lump sum lease payment of $180,000 for a 10-year agreement.

The project is estimated to cost between $350,000 and $500,000, with TowerCo footing the bill. The tower will improve service in the area, and Verizon is interested in the anchor tenant spot, reported the Beacon Journal. If additional carriers co-locate, the district will receive $400 a month per company, with a two percent annual increase.

“This isn’t the prettiest thing to look at, and we’ll hear about that from the neighbors, but those same neighbors are equally concerned about access and safety, and we’re in a dead zone,” Board President Rick Kellar told the Journal. “I think this is an important thing for us to do.”

Construction can’t begin until TowerCo completes an environmental review, notifies Native American tribes that have had claims on the property, and receives approval from the Tallmadge Planning Commission and Tallmadge City Council. According to a TowerCo rep, this preliminary work could take up to nine months to complete, with construction taking 45 to 60 days. The goal is for the tower to be live in Q4 2022.
