FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr said on Twitter Thursday, “5G is about our economic leadership for the next decade.” Carr was responding to a tweet from Donald Trump where the President said he wants 5G, “even 6G, in the United States as soon as possible.”

“It is far more powerful, faster, and smarter than the current standard,” noted the President.

“American companies must step up their efforts, or get left behind. There is no reason that we should be lagging behind [in] something that is so obviously the future. I want the United States to win through competition, not by blocking out currently more advanced technologies,” Trump tweeted.

Carr explained, the FCC is positioning the U.S. to be first through: Smart infrastructure policies, freeing up more spectrum and expanding 5G jobs across the country.

Fellow Commissioner Michael O’Rielly chimed in with: “I’ll continue as a chief advocate for policies to ensure private sector U.S. companies (not government built networks) can fully compete and have resources to win [the] global 5G race. Similarly, we must fight other nations’ deceptive and deceitful practices favoring their ‘companies.’”

WIA issued the following statement: “WIA applauds the Administration’s  focus on United States leadership in the race to 5G, in which we are already ahead. We are working with the Administration and Congress to step up the effort. We appreciate the leadership by the Administration on all three legs of the stool needed to win the 5G race: more spectrum, siting policies that encourage private investment, and building the wireless workforce of the future.”

CTIA, the wireless industry association, applauded Trump’s statement, saying the association shares the President’s commitment to leading the world in next-generation 5G wireless. “Thanks to the innovation, hard work and investment of America’s wireless industry, the first commercial 5G deployments are happening now, in communities across the country.  With the administration’s continued backing, the U.S. wireless industry can bring more robust 5G networks to more communities faster.”
