Twitter has begun adding fact-checking labels to tweets that wrongly link 5G mobile networks with the coronavirus. The action occurs as such theories still incite some to damage cell towers both in the U.S. and abroad.
Instead of deleting or hiding such tweets, Twitter is showing a message on them that reads “Get the facts on COVID-19.” When clicked, users are taken to a page titled “No 5G isn’t causing Coronavirus.” It debunks the conspiracy theories by linking to credible media websites and other official sources.
“We’re prioritizing the removal of COVID-19 content when it has a call to action that could potentially cause harm,” a Twitter spokesperson said in a statement to CNBC. “As we’ve said previously, we will not take enforcement action on every Tweet that contains incomplete or disputed information about COVID-19.”
Twitter pledged in May to fact-check coronavirus misinformation.
Inside Towers reported 5G is not connected with the coronavirus pandemic in any way. The World Health Organization recently updated its COVID-19 “myth-busting” web page, stating that 5G does not cause the coronavirus.
