Upcoming Repack Reimbursement Estimates Have Dielectric Charged Up

American Tower Corporation placed a $3.9 million order with Dielectric for TFU-WB Broadband, side-mount antennas plus transmission line in March to prepare for the upcoming TV channel repack, Inside Towers reported. We wanted to check-in with Dielectric VP and GM Keith Pelletier to get his view on the television channel repack, now that broadcasters face an upcoming deadline (July 12) to submit reimbursement estimates for their repacking costs as well as their construction permit applications to the FCC.

How is the repack preparation coming along for Dielectric?

Very well. We’ve got a team of engineers and sales staff generating technical proposals and quotes. We’ve completed over 700 and have capacity to do more.

From engineering through operations, we’ve streamlined processes and have plans to stock some common size pipes. These efforts enable us to significantly cut the production lead time. For common size antennas, a seven to nine week production is viable.

We’ve also secured a storage facility so a broadcaster can place their order any time and we’ll store it until the site is ready. Several broadcasters are already taking advantage of this service.

Bottom line, we’re excited and ready for the repack.

What would make the repack process go faster?

The repack is already on a very aggressive pace. What could accelerate that –  do what can be done now, ensure all documentation is accurate and in place so there are no delays. Basically, eliminate anything that could cause a delay. If an interim antenna is needed, get that on order now. Lock-in your crew so they can begin to solidify schedules. If ATSC 3.0 is part of your plan, make sure you have a quote breakdown of the additional cost.

What should stations be doing now?

Tactically, stations should determine whether they’re going to maximize, and how much, if any, VPol they’ll add for ATSC 3.0.  If they need to schedule a VSWR sweep to determine the usability of their existing transmission line, field engineers are available.  Additionally, determine which RF components in the building are reusable and which need to be included in the quote from the transmitter manufacturer.

There is no debate that tower crews will be at a premium, and many networks have already locked-in with their crew of choice. The 90-day period for budgets is ticking. If you don’t already have your antenna technical proposal or quote, please contact us at: www.dielectric.com.
