Verizon Wireless has appeared before the Columbiana, OH, planning commission, the first step in gaining permission to build a 190-foot tall tower along state Route 14. The tower also would have a nine-foot tall lightning rod attached and be at least 350 feet away from residences. However, there is an issue with the designated setback area, among other items.

Richard Hanson, a representative for Verizon, appeared at the planning commission meeting, and he said that there are “no other towers for us to locate on that will fit our needs.” He also raised the issue of the codified ordinance limits of the 1,000 ft. setback, meaning that the company would “have to have at least 93 acres of land surrounding the tower to meet the requirement,” according to the Morning Journal News. The ordinance that was passed in October, 2001, could be modified, but other issues that Verizon must pass include a public hearing, $3,500 in permitting fees, a review by an independent registered engineer and council approvals.

Morning Journal News reports that if the council approves and Verizon is granted the permits, construction must begin within 180 days and must be completed within 360 days. The public hearing has been scheduled for March 8.
