Vermont Issues RFP For Broadband Provider

The Department of Public Service of Vermont issued an RFP that will study the feasibility of the state’s electric companies providing broadband service using electric distribution and transmission infrastructure.

Among other things, a feasibility determination shall address potential advantages of serving utilities’ internal data needs and expanding fiber for providing broadband service. It also hopes to address the compatibility of broadband service with existing electric service and establish a contract with a company that can identify the unserved and under-served areas of the state. RFP responses are due by 4 p.m. on July 1.

The contract arising from this RFP will be for a period of 12-months with an option to renew for one additional 12-month period. The state anticipates the start date will be on or around August 1, with a report ready for the Legislature by January 2020, according to Vermontbiz.com.

Vermont’s governor recently signed bill H513, designed to aid broadband deployment throughout the state. The act would help establish local broadband development, similar to how a group of towns in Orange and Windsor counties got together to form ECFiber, Vermontbiz.com reported.  Comments? Email Us.
