Welcome to The New “Era” of In-Building Wireless

Several key technology trends are converging to help deliver high-quality in-building wireless service. One of them, C-RAN, stands for centralized, or cloud radio access network. C-RAN refers to the centralization of the base station resource to achieve more dynamic resource allocation while maintaining low cost and high reliability.

For large and medium enterprises, ubiquitous, multi-operator in-building wireless connectivity is increasingly critical for employee productivity, customer satisfaction, and even brand reputation.

For building owners and managers, excellent wireless connectivity can increase property value. For mobile network operators, neutral hosts and system integrators, the system must be economical to install and manage, and flexible to meet evolving mobile technologies and customer needs.

For over 40 years, CommScope has been helping design, build and manage wired and wireless networks worldwide. Shaping the always-on networks of tomorrow, CommScope anticipates what’s next when it comes to mobile networks.

CommScope Era™ uses a C-RAN architecture to centralize and slim down the “head end” components and provide more flexibility in how their capacity is allocated throughout a building or campus. Hence the descriptor “C-RAN antenna system.” For end user enterprises and their employees and customers, Era delivers strong, consistent mobile coverage.

According to Upendra Pingle, vice president of mobility solutions, CommScope, “We have invested heavily to create an all-digital platform architecture that improves the economics of in-building wireless. As a result, we are seeing the solution adopted not only in traditional ‘DAS’ settings like stadiums, but also in hospitals, hotels, office buildings and even cultural heritage sites.”

CommScope’s all-digital Era C-RAN antenna system makes in-building wireless simpler and more economical. Operating on standard IT infrastructure—Category 6A and fiber—Era allows operators, neutral hosts and enterprises to provide high capacity for in-building coverage.

How does it work? The Era C-RAN antenna system evolves the conventional distributed antenna system (DAS) architecture by adding C-RAN capabilities. With Era, you can:

  • Move all baseband resources across multiple buildings to a single, streamlined head-end or even to the operator’s C-RAN hub, reducing the system footprint to save valuable real estate.
  • Take advantage of an all-digital CPRI baseband interface that eliminates the need for RF signal sources, further reducing head-end size and power requirements.
  • Adjust capacity across the network through a web-based drag-and-drop interface.

Path to 5G

Era makes in-building wireless solutions simpler to install, easier to manage and less expensive to operate—all while giving operators, neutral hosts and enterprises the room they need to grow as new technologies and applications come to market. Era’s all-digital, frequency-agnostic system architecture ensures that the system will be able to support new services in existing and new bands. Era’s multiplexed fiber fronthaul can also be shared with other communication services.

“CommScope Era is a key enabler for network densification in LTE Advanced and 5G,” said Pingle.
