Naming 2021 “The Year of Broadband Access,” Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers garnered the support of growers and dairy producers who are hungry for connectivity. As the Daily Jefferson County Union reports, the Governor’s announcement generated positive feedback from numerous agricultural businesses in the state who stand to benefit from the $200 million broadband investment.

“A lack of broadband access is hindering the economy in rural communities and putting some Wisconsinites at a disadvantage when it comes to business, education, and even health,” said Darin Von Ruden, president of the Wisconsin Farmers Union. “Wisconsin Farmers Union appreciates Governor Tony Evers’ efforts to make 2021 the Year of Broadband Access, and we will continue to strive for a Wisconsin in which all people have access to affordable and reliable broadband, regardless of their zip code.”

Of the estimated 400,000 Wisconsin residents without broadband access, almost all live in rural communities. Even those who have some internet connectivity struggle with inadequate processing speeds. The Governor’s Task Force on Broadband Access said they are working to identify and close those gaps.

“Inadequate broadband service continues to hold back Wisconsin’s farming communities from reaching their full potential,” stated Amy Penterman, president of the Dairy Business Association. “Having the ability to connect with customers and neighbors through social media has become essential for our farm businesses. High-speed internet also powers innovation through things like precision agriculture technology that makes our farm operations more efficient and environmentally sound.”

“Reliable broadband access is key to the modernization and growth of food processors across Wisconsin,” agreed Jason Culotta, Executive Director, Midwest Food Products Association. “We applaud Governor Evers’ focus on this issue and look forward to working with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle to encourage investments in our rural communities and businesses.”
