A guyed tower in Nebraska came down last week in what the local sheriff’s department is calling an act of sabotage. The Furnas County Sheriff’s Office is conducting the investigation on the Verizon tower that was toppled in a field south of Oxford, NE, according to the Kansas City Star. The cost of the damage is estimated at around $575,000, officials said. In addition to Verizon, the tower supported equipment from the sheriff’s office, the fire department and local schools, according to the release.

“Preliminary findings indicated intentional damage to a guide [sic] wire anchor that resulted in complete structural failure of the tower causing it to fall,” the sheriff’s office said.

Both the FBI and Nebraska State Patrol have been brought in to investigate the incident. In a statement from the sheriff’s office, the FBI “is considering opening an investigation into the matter as an act of domestic terrorism,” although the Bureau declined further comment.  Sheriff’s deputies said they will be looking at data that may have been captured by the tower prior to its destruction “in hopes of identifying a suspect or suspects.”

Anyone with information related to the case is asked to contact the Furnas County Sheriff’s Office at 308-268-2245.
