Cell Tower Welcomed in Moore County

Following a public hearing, the Moore County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved plans to build a 255-foot cell tower. As The Pilot reports, the North Carolina community suffers from dead zones that make it difficult for anyone to make or receive calls. Cellco Partnership has proposed constructing the new tower in a section of the county that is remote enough to keep it out of backyards, but centrally located to provide coverage across a wide area.

“This will fill that gap,” said Ralph Wyngarden, a zoning specialist speaking on behalf of Cellco and Verizon. “The proposed height will help us better serve the lower areas, particularly along the Deep River area and North Moore Road, [along with] the North Moore High School area.” Wyngarden added that the tower will be able to accommodate three other carriers in addition to the initial occupant, Verizon.

According to The Pilot, no voices of dissent were raised at the recent Board of Commissioners meeting. This matches Wyngarden’s observation that, “The sentiment has been positive and in favor of addressing the need in this area.”

Commissioner Otis Ritter added his thoughts, saying, “If you don’t have the coverage, you don’t have the ambulances coming. It’s been an issue forever, but we’re moving forward. It is a safety feature that we need to overcome in this county,” he added, and is “well-past due.”
