ADRF Adds C-Band Wireless Technology

Advanced RF Technologies, Inc. (ADRF), a DAS and repeater provider, has launched the ADXV DAS C-band solution and the SDRX C-band repeater. The solutions allow mobile carriers, building owners, system integrators, and neutral hosts to bring 5G coverage for buildings and venues of every size.

“We’re seeing a lot of DAS network upgrades and increasing market demand for 5G on the public network,” Andrew Jun, CTO of ADRF, told Inside Towers. “Plus, the use of private networks has started booming.”

The ADXV DAS C-band modules include mid-power remote and high-power remote options supporting C-band frequencies ranging from 3.7 GHz to 3.98 GHz. It can be deployed standalone or added to an existing ADXV DAS chassis for an upgrade path from 4G/LTE systems. The new SDRX C-band repeater also supports frequencies between 3.7 GHz to 3.98 GHz and can be mounted on a rooftop, sidewall, or pole to bring 5G coverage for small to medium size buildings in busy metropolitan areas as well as highways or isolated rural areas.

Jun said ADRF is seeing increased activities in massive IoT and Industrial IoT, as well as Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence, all of which will make use of the C-band. “We are seeing a lot of demand for 5G, and, especially, C-band is in great demand.”

C-band will be more popular than millimeter wave because of its superior coverage characteristics, Jun said.  But still 3.7 GHz is much higher than traditional commercial wireless bands, such as 600, 700, and 800 MHz, AWS (1.7-2.1 GHz), and PCS (1.85-1.99 GHz), which provided a challenge. “We had to provide much more power to have similar coverage in the C Band spectrum, compared to those traditional bands,” Jun said.

Channel size has grown significantly, as well. Traditionally, wireless has used 20 MHz channels, but, with 5G, channel sizes have grown to 100 MHz and 300 MHz. “Our amplifier technologies were limited to a lower amount of bandwidth, so we had to increase the linearity of our amplifiers to handle that channel size,” Jun said. That involved improving the Crest Factor Reduction and Digital Pre-Distortion.

As a result, the ADXV DAS C-band solution supports 600 MHz, 700 MHz, Band 14, SMR800, SMR900, PCS, AWS, WCS (2.3 GHz), BRS (2.5 GHz) (TD-LTE/5GNR and FDD-LTE) and C-Band (TDD). ADRF debuted the ADXV DAS C-band modules and passives, as well as the SDRX C-band repeater at their booth during Mobile World Congress Las Vegas last week.
