Mobile network operators are developing new network deployment models by joining with hyperscale computing providers. Google Cloud for one has just announced another inroad into Europe with an agreement to create a scalable cloud-native network for Deutsche Telekom, allowing it to bring the cloud closer to mobile and connected devices at the edge. Previously, Google Cloud had signed agreements with multiple MNOs, including BT, Orange, Jio and Vodafone.

The two companies will jointly pilot several network services such as 5G Standalone in Austria, as well as remote packet gateway functions. Through data analytics, Deutsche Telekom will increase its understanding of its networks. Several use cases regarding anomaly detection, performance, and trace data will use data-driven operations and automated workflows using open, Kubernetes-based solutions (an open-source system for automating deployment, scaling, and management of containerized applications.) Data analytics, artificial intelligence and machine learning will help to provide a better understanding of customer needs and to optimize service offerings.

“Communication service providers are increasingly looking for cloud-native solutions to advance the deployment of network functions and drive automation, elasticity, and scalability,” said Thomas Kurian, CEO, Google Cloud. “We believe our partnership with Deutsche Telekom will deliver significantly improved experiences for end users that will ultimately raise the standard for the telecommunications industry.”

In March, Google Cloud joined with BT in a strategic, five-year partnership to accelerate BT’s company-wide digital transformation to customer experiences, reduce costs and risk, and build new revenue streams. The BT initiative includes a cloud-first and AI-first strategy for hyper-personalized customer engagement.

In June of last year, Google Cloud made inroads in India with a collaboration with Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited (Jio) with the goal of deploying 5G in enterprise and consumer segments nationwide. A month before that, multinational MNO Vodafone chose Google Cloud to jointly build an integrated data platform with the capability to process and move huge volumes of data globally from multiple systems into the cloud.

Back in July 2020, Google Cloud entered France through a strategic partnership with Orange to accelerate the transformation of Orange’s IT infrastructure and the development of future cloud services, in particular edge computing. The collaboration was set up for the development of future advanced cloud, edge computing and cybersecurity services.
