AT&T dropped their plans to build a new cell tower at the Pine Island Fire District in New York. The company terminated its lease agreement, and the fire district withdrew their bid to host the tower. AT&T’s Network Real Estate Administration division sent a letter to the district on March 3, stating, “New Cingular Wireless PCS is terminating our Option and Lease Agreement with you.” The three-sentence letter gave no reason for the termination, and company officials could not be reached for comment by the Record Online. When the commissioners met last week, they approved a resolution to withdraw their interest in the proposal. The district’s one and a half year effort for bring the 150-foot cell tower ended abruptly after many complications. Over the year and a half, community opposition peaked and led to two lawsuits: one filed by a neighbor and the other by the Town of Warwick. The Town of Warwick challenged the fire district’s declaration that they were immune from town planning and zoning laws. With the tower plans dropped, Warwick officials and resident Theresa Benjamin are withdrawing their lawsuit.
