What’s the fastest way to get 5G deployed in your town?

During a light moment in a Senate Subcommittee hearing on broadband infrastructure yesterday, Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) noted that “hundreds” of small cells were installed in the Twin Cities so it could host the Super Bowl this year. She asked CTIA EVP Brad Gillen how carriers can address surges in data usage for events like this, and when 5G comes along.

“We should all visit the Twin Cities because they really have the best networks in the country. You have five times more capacity today than you did last year,” said Gillen. “Minneapolis is ready for 5G in a way other cities are not.”

That led Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) to quip: “I’ve now figured out how to get broadband to West Virginia. Host the Super Bowl. It’s that easy!”
