Dr. Edwin Roman, a native of Puerto Rico now living in central Pennsylvania found out his relatives on the storm-ravaged island are without water and power and only have one means of communications: their cell phones.  But phones need recharging and the only working power sources on most parts of the island are car batteries.  Dr. Roman began collecting phone chargers and accessories to send to the island, which would allow people to charge their phones via their cars and trucks, and called it “Project Power Up Puerto Rico,” according to PA Homepage.

Enter Wendy Weaver, owner of Weaver Wireless Consultants. Weaver, who bills herself as “The Cell Phone Lady,” met Dr. Roman at a local networking event and hopped on board with the project. “This seemed like something we could do, and it was something we could put together pretty quick and make a difference,” says Weaver. “I was excited to be a part of it and it all just kind of came together really fast.” To donate car chargers contact Wendy Weaver at 570-220-0154 or via email at weaverwirelessconsultantsllc@gmail.com.

In the nearly six weeks since Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico, 85 percent of the island is still without power, plus the head of the territory’s power authority moved to cancel the multi-million-dollar project with Whitefish Energy, reported PA Homepage. “Project Power Up Puerto Rico” has since been collecting the chargers and sending them to Dr. Roman’s mother’s church in Puerto Rico where a distribution center has been set up. Two shipments have already been sent to the island, and donations will be collected until the end of November.
