Gulf South Towers (GST) is planning to build a 120-foot, close-mount tower with co-location for three providers to offer better service to the area. However, GST hasn’t yet secured any carriers for the tower after 12 months. The Chattanoogan reported that at a recent meeting of the Lookout Mountain, TN Commission, GST asked for a six to 12-month extension on its leasing option before starting to pay rent to the town. Without an extension, GST has two options come December 1; start paying rent to the town or abandon the project.

Officials disagreed on whether the extension should be granted. Regarding the tower, Commissioner of Fire and Police Jim Bentley said, “it is time we start getting paid for it,” while Mayor Carol Mutter said, “I feel like we shouldn’t back out of a cell phone tower at this point.”

By the close of the meeting, the Commission did approve a motion to extend the option from December 1 until December 31, 2017. During that time, GST will attempt to sign a contract with a carrier and simultaneously, commissioners will also research alternatives.
