Mexico is set to become the first country in the world to completely free up spectrum in the 600 MHz band for 5G services after communications regulator IFT approved the reallocation of 48 channels using radio frequencies between 614 MHz and 698 MHz to DTT, according to Telecompaper.  Channels will continue operating in the UHF band under channel 37, according to the IFT.  Other countries such as Canada, New Zealand and the U.S. have adopted ITU proposals to repurpose spectrum in the 600 MHz band.  Last year’s broadcast incentive auction in the U.S. raised over $19 billion.

Mexico’s wholesale 4G shared network on the 700 MHz band is due to be activated on March 31. The Altan consortium will open the first phase of the ‘Red Compartida’ network, which makes up 30 percent of the country’s population, reported Telecompaper. The IFT forced Altan Redes to amend its wholesale reference offer it made back in December in order to comply with the current regulatory framework.
