The Milpitas Unified School District’s Board of Education was scheduled to vote last week on whether to renew contracts that would allow cell towers on three school properties; however, the vote was postponed until February 24 to give the cell tower companies time to address the board. At the January 27 meeting, parents and community members expressed their opposition to keeping towers on school grounds. The school district attorney’s explained that they needed to consider the ramifications if they decided not to renew the contracts. In order to break the contract, the Board of Education would have to prove scientifically that cell towers were jeopardizing the safety of school children. Boardmember Bob Nunez authorized staff to open negations on the contracts so they could find out what options existed before voting on the renewal. According to Mercury News, “A cell tower at Rose Elementary School was approved in 2002 and garners the district almost $32,000 in revenue annually; the tower at Rancho Middle School was approved in 2004 and brings the district more than $33,000 annually; and a cell tower at Milpitas High approved in 2005 brings in more than $33,000 annually.”
