Orange Maroc signed a deal with Medusa Submarine Cable System to construct the longest submarine cable system in the Mediterranean. The partnership aims to build a submarine cable to enhance Morocco’s digital interconnection with Europe, reported Morocco World News.
The cable will link shores in Africa and Europe with 16 landing points in various countries. Orange will share the cable with other telecoms, reported Morocco World News.
“We are particularly proud to contribute to the trans-Mediterranean digital connectivity by deploying the landing and submarine cable infrastructure in the Nador region, which will connect Morocco to the North African and Southern European countries involved in this project,” CEO of Orange Morocco, Hendrik Kasteel, said in a statement. He added that the project would “enhance Morocco’s attractiveness as a gateway for digital exchanges in Africa.”
According to Orange, its Maroc network is already connected to Europe via four submarine cables. The company has plans to invest in subsequent projects which would “improve the quality of services offered to Moroccans.”
Orange is also strengthening its market foothold in Africa with a major fiber optics network in West Africa, providing stable interconnection between eight African countries through over 12,400 miles of land and sea infrastructure.
