Nokia released a new research report highlighting the steady growth of 5G in the Middle East and Africa region (MEA). The Nokia MEA Mobile Broadband Index indicated 5G’s impact on digital transformation, reported The Fast Mode

The report confirms that the Middle East has surpassed Africa regarding 5G adoption, as many operators in Africa are still focused on 4G business models, which will remain dominant until 2027. According to the report, voice traffic still relies on 2G and 3G networks in many parts of the region.

In the MEA region, the mobile subscriber base is expected to grow. The compound annual growth rate (CAGR) is estimated at 6 percent. According to the report, 4G networks in MEA currently account for 79 percent of overall data traffic.

The report forecast increases by 2027, including:

  • 4G and 5G (combined) will account for 90 percent of data traffic
  • 4G subscribers will reach 1,214 million (53 percent of total subscribers)
  • 5G adoption is estimated to reach 380 million subscribers (17 percent of the total)
  • The average revenue per user (ARPU) is estimated to increase by $3.40
  • Total traffic will grow at a CAGR of 32 percent

The region within MEA expected to adopt 5G the fastest is the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). The report attributes most of this growth to Saudi Arabia. The GCC region is on track to reach 75 percent of 5G adoption by 2027.
