The results are in: T-Mobile keeps the lead in median download speeds, according to Ookla’s Q1 2022 report. The data showed that overall speeds plateaued over the past three months, but all major U.S. carriers saw improved median download speeds since Ookla’s Q4 2021 report.

T-Mobile took the top spot with 117.83 Mbps compared to its Q4 result of 90.65 Mbps. Next, Verizon’s numbers jumped from 44.67 Mbps to 62.62 Mbps. Both T-Mobile and Verizon can attribute increases to mid-band 5G spectrum. AT&T improved slightly with 56.10 Mbps, up from 49.25 Mbps, relying on recently purchased mid-band spectrum.

Ookla’s report noted that not all plans include access to 5G. Verizon and AT&T still offer plans without 5G access, while T-Mobile’s customers are all 5G-enabled. T-Mobile saw a modest increase in 5G availability from 61.4 percent to 65 percent, while AT&T held steady, rising from 48 percent to 49.4 percent. Verizon dropped from 36.4 percent to 28.2 percent.

The Ookla study also recorded device information, with the Galaxy S22 Ultra (with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1) coming in first place with a median download speed of 116.33 Mbps. The Z Fold 3 took second place with 100.83 Mbps, followed by the two new iPhone 13 Pro models.
