Schools in Roanoke County, Virginia, could be the sites of more cell towers after Milestone Communications surveys the properties for marketability, the Roanoke Times Reported. Last week, the county school board approved an agreement with the company to market the schools for freestanding cell towers. “The county would earn $20,000 per tower, $5,000 per carrier and 40 percent of the monthly rent carriers would pay. Milestone, which is not being paid by the county, would pocket the rest of the monthly rent,” according to the Roanoke Times. Some of the towers could house up to five carriers depending on their network gaps. The towers will not be built on every school property, just the ones that could improve cell and data services in underserved areas, Board Chairman David Wymer said.” (Roanoke Times) Milestone Communications will first secure approval from carriers and special-use permits from the county before any projects move forward.
