Community leaders and technology providers met at the Hilton Savannah Desoto in Savannah, GA, last Tuesday. The meeting discussed how things would change if Savannah became a ‘smart city’, a city that utilizes technology to make it run more efficiently. Verizon attended the meeting to present government and private enterprises with information on the value of being a smart city. Savannah is already working with Verizon to enhance their network in the Historic District to provide better coverage during annual events like the St. Patrick’s Day parade.

“We’re here to present to government and private enterprise the value of a smart city concept,” says Mark Bryan, director of business sales for the Georgia/Alabama region of Verizon Wireless, which hosted the conference. Gordon Cook, executive director of network for the Georgia/Alabama Region of Verizon Wireless said, “We’re going to activate permanent small cells, which you can think of as very, very small cell phone towers in light posts downtown. This will help keep the historic aesthetic of Savannah. You won’t even see them, unless you know what to look for.” Business in Savannah explained that this event addressed how the smart city concept would help municipalities save tax dollars through more efficient and sustainable practices.
