SMART IoT Act Goes to Senate

The House last week passed and sent to the Senate, the SMART (State of Modern Application, Research, and Trends) IoT Act. The measure was authored by Digital Commerce and Consumer Protection Subcommittee Chairman Bob Latta (R-OH) and Rep. Peter Welch (D-VT).

H.R. 6032 directs the Secretary of Commerce to conduct a study on the state of the internet-connected devices industry. It will include a list of industry sectors that develop IoT devices, public-private partnerships focused on their promotion and adoption, as well as emerging standards.

CTIA SVP Government Affairs, Kelly Cole stated: “This bipartisan bill will leverage industry efforts to develop innovative, secure IoT applications and ensure continued U.S. leadership in IoT development.”
