The U.S. Army is investing $40 million in a new effort to test 5G tactical technologies and capabilities. SIGNAL reported that the project, called Strategic & Spectrum Missions Advanced Resilient Trust Systems, seeks responses to a request for solutions by April 15.

The project will explore solutions for 5G network prototype integrations with tactical Army platforms, unmanned aerial systems, and other applications, reported SIGNAL. The National Security Technology Accelerator (NSTXL) has the RFS information available via its website

“The desired prototype is a flexible, reconfigurable and rapidly deployable private 5G network that supports experimentation with identified 5G Use Cases in various mission scenarios,” the RFS announcement states. “The military will be able to communicate more effectively through the implementation of 5G-based solutions.”

The RFS notes that the “Department of Defense (DoD) 5G Strategy…presents a fundamental change in communications structure across the world that provides a potential opportunity for the DoD to operate anywhere at any time.” S2MART is also looking to harness autonomous systems in the prototype for use with “persistent surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities over a wide area.”

According to the RFS, “These unmanned systems can go where manned systems cannot, thereby increasing stand-off distances and survivability and reducing reaction time for commanders.”

The NSTXL consortium will host an open “Project TALX” on March 25, from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. EDT. Submit applications on the NSTXL website.
