Massachusetts has already opted in to FirstNet, being rolled out by AT&T, and now the state also authorized Verizon Wireless to offer public safety wireless devices and services to its agencies, reported GCN. According to Verizon officials, the Massachusetts contract is the first state and local multi-vendor procurement in the nation for public safety-grade wireless data services.

Public safety users will be able to choose either AT&T/FirstNet or Verizon to access public safety-grade data services and devices. Users will be able to talk, text, share multimedia, and communicate in real-time.

“The ability for public safety users throughout Massachusetts to communicate seamlessly while responding to incidents is of the utmost importance,” said Kerry Collins, undersecretary for forensic science and technology at the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security. “Bringing real-time communications to our first responders enables us to better protect and serve.”
