Sweden’s national security agency SAPO warns against an increase in threatening acts to the country’s telecommunications industry by Russia. The Associated Press reported the agency believes Russia also poses a direct risk to the rest of Europe.

Head of SAPO, Charlotte Von Essen, described Russia as “unpredictable” during a recent defense conference. She said, “there is reason to be particularly vigilant to counter espionage and sabotage.” Von Essen warned that the security agency expects Russia to use non-official platforms “such as Russian diaspora, institutions, and companies in Sweden.”

Mobile World Live reported the news after Swedish telecom network vendor Ericsson announced its intentions to exit operations in Russia following the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Ericsson has mostly phased out of the Russian market, with a small presence currently lagging.
