Take It To The River: Connectivity Comes to the Amazon

Taking advantage of the great reach of the Amazon River throughout Brazil, a new partnership is looking to use the waterways to deliver digital connectivity. The Infovia 01 project envisions placing underwater fiber-optic cable in the northern Amazon. As DevelopingTelecoms reports, the mission is a collaboration between Seja Digital and HMN Tech. Deja Digital was created by regulator Anatel as a non-governmental, non-profit organization, and HMN is provider of turnkey submarine network solutions.

The partners say the cable will not disrupt the environment and will bring high speed internet services to public institutions and individuals along the route. The digital outreach is part of the country’s Brazilian North Connected Programme.

The armored cable is reported to be resistant to both aggressive sharp toothed river dwellers, and passing tugboats. The selected cable was chosen, in part, because it can also work well with temperature variations present in the region.

As its first deployment, the cable will stretch between the principal cities of Manaus and Santarem. The 1,204km (748 mile) route will connect nine other cities along the route as well. HMN, the provider of the 24 cables needed to complete the project and Seja Digital have not stated a timeline, but have described the project as one that can be completed quickly and safely.
