One of the early announcements to come out of the NAB Show this weekend involved two broadcast transmission equipment manufacturers. GatesAir, specializing in wireless, over-the-air content delivery solutions for radio and TV, said on Saturday that Thomson Broadcast signed an agreement to acquire GatesAir from an affiliate of The Gores Group. The transaction is subject to certain regulatory filings and is expected to close in the second half of 2022. Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.

Cincinnati-based GatesAir recently celebrated 100 years in business. The manufacturer has recently seen strong growth, coming off a successful participation in the television spectrum repack program. GatesAir worked with Bowen Inc. on a process that involved interest from several strategic and financial parties. It said Thomson Broadcast prevailed due to its highly complementary fit. The companies said by combining, they’ll create a “scaled, comprehensive platform with greater capabilities in innovation, design and product efficiency and an expanded portfolio of holistic, turnkey broadcast solutions.”

“Our combination with Thomson Broadcast will create a combined company of larger scale even better suited to meet the ever-evolving needs of our customers all over the globe,” said GatesAir CEO Bruce Swail.

For more than 100 years, Paris-based Thomson Broadcast has forged experience in the fields of Digital Terrestrial Transmission and AM radio, including digital radio. “In 2018, we set the goal to establish ourselves in the U.S. market. With Thomson Broadcast and GatesAir now united, these two companies will make us stronger in America and globally as well,” says Thomson Broadcast Chairman Ylias Akbaraly.

The 2022 NAB Show runs through this Wednesday, April 27.
