Tower Crews are in High Demand

With all of the mobile carriers competing to finish their 4G LTE deployment, the demand for tower crews is soaring, putting pressure on current tower crews to finish the job quickly. Not only do tower climbers have to put their lives on the line to complete a job, it’s looking like they may need more skills as technology develops. According to News Digest, “With more wireless carriers using RRU’s (Remote Radio Units) placed at the top of the tower, tower crews need more skills. Tower crews will have to become more like technicians with an understanding of RRU’s, fiber, software etc. In 2014 we will likely see climbers referred to as Tower technicians who install, inspect, maintain, and repair tower systems and structures. Responsibilities include learning and performing all tasks related to cellular communications towers. Since the people back at the wireless carriers don’t climb towers, it will be essential for the tower tech to be comfortable working on computers to send emails and upload photos. Those photos are very important to show what’s going on off the ground.”
