Tower Location Set

Clinton County officials in Michigan have taken a step towards improving the communications problems for emergency responders. They approved the site plans for a new 300-foot communications tower, despite arguments over location. The first proposed site was on Cutler Road, 120 feet north of the road, and residents felt this was too close to nearby homes. Clinton County Administrator Ryan Wood said the new location received a better response. “There were many residents at the meeting in which the site plan was reviewed.” Wood said. “Only one individual spoke at the meeting and made some nice, positive comments. I don’t think everyone was happy with the result, but they realize that there is a need for the tower.” (The Lansing State Journal)

Emergency responders had problems contacting Central Dispatch in the past due to terrain and the distance from existing towers. While the site plan was approved, there is still additional site work to be completed. The FCC and FAA must approve the structure, but Wood is hopeful construction will start in November. He did admit that it could be put off until next spring, depending on how slow the process moves. The project is estimated to cost $1.9 million and is being paid for with funds raised through the county’s 911 surcharge on all telephone devices, according to the Lansing State Journal.
