Tower Still Standing Prompts NJ Mayor to Take a Stand

A decommissioned cell tower in North Haledon, NJ has been on the chopping block for years. As NorthJersey.com reports, T-Mobile and Mayor Randy George have been unable to come to terms on the tower’s removal. The structure has not been in use for at least two years. George filed a lawsuit earlier this year in an attempt to force T-Mobile to take down the 150-foot lattice tower.

T-Mobile is not the original owner of the tower, which has changed hands several times since it was first constructed in 2000. Determining the enforceable terms and responsibilities for the tower has been something of a legal tangle. T-Mobile has agreed to go ahead and remove the tower and has engaged a local contractor to start work on the project, reports the source. The demolition is expected to cost approximately $40,000.

As part of the final arrangements between the town and the telecom, T-Mobile requested that Mayor George drop the lawsuit and allow the company up to six months to complete the work. Thus far, the mayor has declined to accept T-Mobile’s proposal saying that he wanted to set a firm deadline. “The problem is that I have no faith in them,” he said. “I don’t trust them to take it down.”
