Microlab, a Wireless Telecom Group Company founded in 1949, is a leading component and integrated solutions partner specializing in RF products that enable signal distribution and deployment of distributed antenna systems (DAS), wireless base stations and small cell networks.

As 5G continues to drive infrastructure development and network densification, engineers are challenged to ensure better system performance but in a more cost-effective manner than previous generations. Wideband solutions allow designers to maximize the utilization of available spectrum assets, which is pivotal in an ever-evolving wireless landscape.

Known for their reliable solutions that encompass 5G licensed, unlicensed, and shared bands, Microlab’s ultra-wideband (UWB) solutions are built to upgrade network performance through enhanced capacity. Case-in-point, last month, Microlab announced its wideband products were selected for deployment in the new indoor/outdoor 70,000 seat SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.

Microlab entered 2020 with the intent to increase the adoption of ultra-wideband solutions early in the design phase of the network to help improve customers’ long-term cost-of-ownership. “To help enable cost-effective deployments, utilization of UWB components minimize the potential for ‘rip and replace’ by addressing existing and emerging frequency allocation,” said Rohan Shah, Product Manager.

Microlab’s portfolio ranges from combiners, filters, cables and power dividers to terminations, tappers and couplers. The broad collection of signal distribution products provides mobile network operators (MNOs), designers and deployment teams wideband operation from 617 to 5925 MHz for low- and mid-band LTE-LAA and 5G New Radio (5G NR) networks. With frequency of operation in CBRS, C-Band and unlicensed 6 GHz bands, they support also utilization in small cells and D-RAN.

iBwave and Ranplan consultation services are also available for reviewing project BOMs, free of charge to customers. This service facilitates future-proofing the network design and improving RF combining and/or distribution solutions. “Consultation with us has proven to be an important resource for our customers to combine their design and deployment experience with our product expertise. We pride ourselves in giving clients the option to either select an available solution or develop a site-specific custom solution – optimizing network performance,” said Shah.

Customers rely on Microlab’s high-quality components and guaranteed specifications to reduce on-site troubleshooting time, delays in commissioning and, consequently, project costs.

Ultra-wideband product components have also been pre-approved by major MNOs and neutral hosts due to benefits including:

  • Sustained Low PIM performance in harsh environmental conditions
  • Highly reliable solutions to minimize downtime
  • Concealment flexibility with small form factor components for quicker commissioning and improved heat dissipation, and
  • Wide availability from stock or at large distribution networks,

— all enabling quicker procurement and faster site deployments.

These sub-6 GHz solutions are designed and tested at Microlab’s headquarters in Parsippany, NJ. Products are available from stock within three to five days or through a broad distribution network.  Custom solutions can be designed to meet site-specific requirements and are often available within a few weeks.

What more is expected from Microlab’s 5G product arsenal? Complementing their ultra-wideband solution selection, the company will soon be releasing a new variant and compact form of its hybrid 4×4 combiner. “The design of this variant was undertaken with the goal to ease concealment challenges for our customers,” Shah explained. “We successfully achieved the goal by developing a 4×4 high power hybrid combiner that is roughly half the size of competing products with high port-to-port isolation and low dissipative loss.”
