A tower project in Fort Collins proposed by Verizon Wireless and managed by Atlas Tower will go before the Council this week after a plethora of options have been denied, reported the Coloradoan. Although residents see the need for the tower, there are mixed reviews from neighbors based on the proposed location, a 4.5-acre lot that houses a single-family home and outbuildings.
The area is not zoned to allow a wireless communications tower, so a City Council waiver would be required to move the project forward, pending two conditions: a reduction in height – from 60-feet to 45-feet – and locating the tower on the north end of the proposed property. To soften the visual impact of the tower, Atlas is proposing it be sheltered in a faux grain silo structure.
Many properties have been considered for the tower project, including those owned by Anheuser-Busch/InBev, schools, a country club, and land adjacent to single-family detached homes, but all have been opposed. According to a memo released by City staff, “Given this scenario, the sites best suited for a cell tower are large sites that will allow the tower to be sited away from nearby developments to mitigate the size of the tower.”
