Personnel stationed at Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickham (JBPHH), a military site in Hawaii, will soon be able to use a private 5G network constructed by Verizon. As ExecutiveGov.com reports, the 5G network will be supported by an Ericsson Private 5G platform along with its accompanying core and radio access network features. The 5G tests undertaken at this base are said to be viewed as a trial run for other facilities looking to incorporate more 5G functionality.

“Verizon Public Sector is proud of its partnership with the U.S. Armed Forces and  excited about the digital transformation work already underway in a selected test area at Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam,” said Senior Vice President for Public Sector at Verizon, Maggie Hallbach.

The digital upgrades at the JBPHH hangar are expected to increase mission effectiveness. Aircraft maintenance staff members are reportedly planning to use the network, in conjunction with the 5G ultra wideband site, to operate foreign object detection technology. The private 5G capability will also help with airplane maintenance programs and user equipment devices within the base.

The U.S. Department of Defense awarded Verizon a Tranche 2 contract worth $11.5 million.
