Verizon Wins Owasco, NY, Appeal

For the most part, the carrier is good to go on a 125-foot tall tower, not the 155-foot tall tower it originally had sought to build on Byrne Road near Melrose Road when the process began in July. Owasco’s Zoning Board of Appeals unanimously voted in favor of the special use permit for Crown Castle to build the tower in the “under-built” area in Cayuga County, but neighbors are concerned about the placement, according to AuburnPub.com. Residents cited the usual concerns — health issues, the tower’s height and lack of public notice.

The next step is obtaining a special building permit for the site, which is zoned residential. While the site plan was approved on November 4, the special use permit “has been the subject of the past several monthly ZBA meetings,” according to chair David Kalabanka.

Verizon reduced the tower’s height by 30 feet for “the sake of coverage overlap and carrier colocation support,” according to Auburn Pub. The structure and setbacks, however, may still reach to be 155-feet tall, and the tower’s height may be added to if another carrier comes into play and the ZBA signs off.
