Syracuse, IN is dotted with lakes and is a popular summer vacation destination. The influx of seasonal visitors can put a strain on local resources, including cell reception. As the Warsaw Times Union reports, the Wawasee Community School Corp (WCSC) has issued a petition to rezone one acre of public use land. Once the land is acquired, the goal is to lease the property to a telecommunications provider who can erect a new cell tower.

Although there are already 10 cell towers in the region, local residents say that they are not up to the task of serving the swell of summer visitors.

“Quite frankly,” said WCSC Superintendent, Steve Troyer, “The service in town — especially in the summer months as people return home for their summer homes — becomes almost unbearable.”

The WCSC members support rezoning the acre of land on the west side of Sycamore Street and southwest of Pickwick Street in Turkey Creek Township to host the new cell tower. Even so, members like Jon Garber have expressed doubts that one more cell tower will be enough to alleviate the poor reception issues.
