The Glenn County Office of Education’s Wi-Fi Tower project will be completed within the next 8 weeks, which will bring wireless Internet to rural schools like Princeton in Colusa County, California as well as Lake, Plaza, and Capay in Glenn County, CA. New computerized tests have been approved for the schools; although, they haven’t been able to utilize this program due to lack of Internet in the schools.

The tower project, which originally called for two 100-foot towers to be constructed at the Willows and Orland administration buildings, was supposed to be completed before the start of the school year, but was delayed when the contractors were called to an out-of-state job. (Source: Sun-Herald)

The two wireless companies, Quarne and Alpha Omega Wireless, conducted a balloon test and found that two 100-foot towers wouldn’t work so instead they have decided to construct one 100-foot tower in Willows and one 40-foot tower in Princeton. According to the Sun-Herald, “But due to costs, the Orland tower will be replaced with a receiver on top of the building in order to bounce high-speed Internet to Plaza, Lake and Capay elementary schools through a contract with AT&T.”

The cost of the tower project is estimated to reach about $420,000, which is still less in the long term than if each school had signed a contract with AT&T for Internet services.
