The Wireless Infrastructure Association released a white paper report yesterday entitled “Wireless Infrastructure By The Numbers.” The report quantifies the size of the nation’s wireless infrastructure sector, including cell towers, indoor and outdoor small cells, macrocell sectors, annual spending, and the American jobs that support this critical resource at the end of 2022. “The truth is, none of the numbers surprised me,” Patrick Halley, President and CEO of WIA, told Inside Towers. ”It’s just a testament to the hard work that our members are out there doing every day to keep America connected. Consumers expect to be online anytime, anywhere – and our industry delivers every day in homes, businesses, public venues, vehicles, and everywhere else across America. This report shows the substantial investment and the massive scale and scope of the infrastructure that makes it all possible, all while employing over 400,000 people.”

Highlights include:

  • In total, network operating expenses for U.S. wireless and mobile networks in 2022 topped $46 billion
  • The U.S. wireless & mobile industry spent $11.9 billion building additional capacity and coverage into the nation’s wireless networks in 2022

At the end of 2022, the U.S. had:

  • 142,100 cellular towers in operation
  • 209,500 macrocell sites (not including small cells) deployed
  • 678,700 macrocell sectors (not including small cells) in operation
  • 452,200 outdoor small cell nodes deployed
  • 747,400 indoor small cell nodes in use
