$250M Fiber Broadband Project Calls for Faster Utility Pole Access

GoNetspeed is investing over $250 million to roll out fiber broadband internet across at least 27 Massachusetts communities, including Haverhill, Beverly, Salem, Quincy, Yarmouth, and Barnstable, marking the company’s largest investment to date.

While the initiative aims to deliver fast, competitively priced internet service to thousands of residents and businesses, according to GoNetspeed, it faces a major hurdle in delays caused by outdated and complex utility pole attachment rules. Lightwave + BTR reports that to build its network, GoNetspeed must attach fiber cables to existing utility poles, which are typically co-owned by electric and telecom providers. The current process involves multiple steps, including surveys, billing, and lengthy make-ready work, slowing deployment significantly.

Jamie Hoare, Chief Legal Counsel at GoNetspeed, emphasized the need for regulatory reform: “To build our network, we need access to existing infrastructure. Streamlining the pole attachment process would accelerate broadband expansion and boost competition, leading to better service and pricing for consumers.”

GoNetspeed currently serves communities such as Amherst, Easthampton, Granby, Ludlow, and Springfield.
