Thailand has established a 5G Alliance to promote the use of next-generation applications in driving economic growth across multiple sectors, including public health, education, transportation, and agriculture, reported Mobile World Live. The country’s Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, announced the endeavor during the 5G Summit 2022 (June 16-17).

According to Prime Minister Prayut, the alliance is designed to aid the nation’s drive to become a digital center for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region. The goal is to encourage collaboration between public and private sectors to “develop 5G technology in every industry,” he said.

The Prime Minister expects that expanding technology and digital innovation will increase economic competitiveness and promote Thailand as an investment hub. Along with various government agencies, representatives from AIS, True Corp, and Huawei make up the alliance.

Thailand is already on its way with 5G, claiming 5.7 million connections. The country auctioned 5G spectrum in February 2020, and AIS launched commercial service that same month on the 2.6 GHz band, reported Mobile World Live.

Julian Gorman, head of the Asia-Pacific region for GSMA, noted the partnership is “a significant milestone for Thailand.” It’s the first alliance to develop a 5G ecosystem in Southeast Asia.
