Like the tower industry, broadcasters are looking to grow their technical talent pool, too. The NAB PILOT technology innovation initiative unveiled a new program to provide grants to NAB members to establish paid engineering or media-technology internships at their radio and television stations. The program will be launched in partnership with the National Association of Broadcasters Educational Foundation.
Typical station engineering duties include tower work such as monitoring tower lights, maintaining the transmitter at the site and ensuring there’s a locked fence around the tower array. NAB tells Inside Towers, the Spring 2019 grants are $3,000 per station, covering part-time 11-week internships (one per station), and the Summer 2019 grants are $4,500 per station, covering full-time, eight-week internships. Read more about the station and intern duties involved, and review application forms here.
The grant application window is open now for part-time Spring 2019 internships; The window closes August 15. The window to apply for full-time Summer 2019 internships opens on September 5, and closes on November 2. Stations chosen to receive the grants will be announced in September and November 2018, respectively.
The program wants to help NAB members that do not offer engineering or media-technology internships. The program will also provide resources to help selected stations identify and support interns, as well as the ability for interns to attend the 2019 NAB Show in Las Vegas.
