The EPA and USDA have introduced “Cool & Connected,” an initiative that helps small towns use broadband service for economic development. According to a press release by the EPA, they have selected Eastport and Millinocket, Maine to partner on the project with the hopes both communities will benefit with improved broadband for residents and businesses.
With the goal of cultivating broadband in rural communities and spurring an economic uptick, EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt said, “Broadband projects can bring more than connectivity to communities. By supporting economic growth in downtown areas, broadband can help spur new business, create jobs, and protect public health and the environment.”
The EPA press release also noted that partner communities will receive direct technical assistance to develop an action plan that leverages planned or existing broadband service to create more connected, economically vibrant main streets and small-town neighborhoods that improve human health and the environment. Additionally, supporting reinvestment in existing areas also helps preserve open spaces and farmlands and protect air and water quality.
Officials in the partner towns are embracing the project wholeheartedly. “In Eastport, we enjoy an amazing quality of life, but we face challenges attracting new residents and new businesses. We couldn’t be more pleased to have this opportunity to help achieve our economic and community development goals,” said City Manager Elaine Abbott.
The Cool & Connected initiative will commence in both communities in early October; during a community workshop October 3-4, in Millinocket and October 5-6, in Eastport.
