ATS Explains the Importance of Nesting Season for Tower Climbers

Not only do tower climbers need to worry about equipment, training, and weather, they also need to know about what to do during migratory bird season. In many cases, it is against the law to climb a tower with a bird’s nest on it. Brittany Lawler of Atlantic Tower Services explains, “If the nest is not active, you should contact the tower owner to gain permission to climb. Note the height of tower, the height of the nest and the height at which you have to work. Most tower owners know whether or not they have active nests on towers and will grant permission to climb on the check in call. Do not disturb any nest during the performance of the work you are doing. If in the event a nest is determined to be active after a the ‘preliminary’ determination that it was inactive, get off the tower immediately and contact the tower owner to let them know that the site has an active bird’s nest. Sites with active Bald Eagle nests require special permission to even work on the ground at the site.”
