Phone service was interrupted for T-Mobile customers and others late Monday by what the company called “voice and data issues.” A company spokesperson said engineers were working to fix the problem that had roughly 115,000 customers reporting outages from Hawaii to New England according to Down Detector, an open-source site that tracks customer input. The site showed similar, but minor spikes, occurring in Europe at the same time.

AT&T and Verizon suffered nationwide as well, but to a lesser degree. As of 6 p.m. Friday EST, AT&T had end-users reporting around 4,000 outages while Verizon customers lodged around 9,000 complaints.

T-Mobile CEO Neville Ray tweeted (@ 4:18 EST yesterday) “Our engineers are working to resolve a voice and data issue that has been affecting customers around the country. We’re sorry for the inconvenience and hope to have this fixed shortly.”

One report from TechCrunch (owned by Verizon) said Level 3, a major fiber network backbone that cell networks rely on for routing calls and messages, “is experiencing an outage, which may point to why other companies are also struggling.”
